Festival and Flame: Trouble in Sandpoint

Goblins like fire. And shiny things.

Goblins like fire. And shiny things.

Many of the adventurers have arrived at the town of Sandpoint in the last number of days. Marco wandered in from about, Leica and Darius from the south, and Conall is a recent permanent resident. The few days preceding the Fall Equinox, the 23rd of Rova, were filled with talk of the upcoming Swallowtail Festival meant to celebrate the Equinox and the completion of the construction of the new cathedral.

Puzzled and curious of the happenings, Leica dallied around in the Market Square, awaiting who knows what was involved in the festival. Marco did the same, loitering and curious to know what was occurring, while Darius was simply there to see what it was his purpose in this town was. Finally, our dear Conall, a man who has laboured to bring the construction of the cathedral to fruition, had a vested interest in the happenings.

Mayor Devon came forward with a few words, welcoming the visitors and citizens of the city to the festival. She made mention to the Fire that occurred five years ago, a time of great sadness and misfortune for the city, but had very little else to say about the subject. She mentioned the late Father Tobyn, a victim to the fire of the previous chapel, and gave way to the next speaker.

The Sheriff Hemlock put a damper on the mood, the absence of Lonjiku Kajitsu was unsurprising, and the animated Cydrak Drokkus was, as always, a handful. Finally, the Father Zantus, a kind-looking man, came up and delivered a brief sermon on anger, and mentioned that the doors of the cathedral are open to anyone in town.

With the festival underway, many games and vendors were available around the town including a Pasty Eating Competition, Unders & Overs, a magic show put forward by the local magic shop owner, the Ogre Stomp strength show, a pig-chasing competition, and, of course, Dragon Racing.

After lunch and a showing of Desna’s Children, Father Zantus tried to get the attention of the crowd in order to begin the consecration of the church. However, his use of a thunderstone appeared to have triggered something more menacing than merely the sound of thunder. It served as a prelude to a goblin assault.

Father Zantus quickly tried to usher innocents into the cathedral while the Sheriff ordered his men into formation. Goblins rushed in, some of them catching each other on fire or falling off buildings and breaking their necks, and another few of them coming at the individuals who decided to stay. Our four adventurers, clearly seeing a moment for their worth, took the centre stage and single-handedly defeated more goblins than could be counted with two hands.

But between saving the lives of a number of Sandpoint guards and a nobleman on the side of the road who claimed he was staying at The Rusty Dragon and would repay them at a later time, there was apparently more trouble to be had at the North Gate. A worried Sheriff trying to keep the peace hurriedly came over and requested the aid of our band of four there where it is said, amidst the chaos, the Mayor was taken away and held captive.

Arriving there, they were shocked at the sight of a number of unconscious guards, unfortunate and helpless captives to a ruthless goblin named Guz and his fellow goblin kin and goblin dog. Defeating these goblins was no easy task, but it seemed with their defeat also came the timely end of the assault. Goblins fled, rushing over to jump down the cliff by the old ruined tower, returning from whence they came.

Amidst arguments and interrogation of the goblin Guz, the adventurers were thanked profusely by many notable persons from town including the Mayor, Father, and Ameiko, The Rusty Dragon innkeeper famed for her talent in music and at cooking. Deciding to keep the slightly-adorable goblin who had very little to offer but a vague mention of a man and woman, the adventurers are tipped off of an interesting fact: the vault of the late Father Tobyn was desecrated during the assault.

Forced to retreat and sleep for the night at The Rusty Dragon, the party went over to the cathedral the next day, and to the graveyard soon after, to investigate the desecration, only to find skeletons awaiting them with scimitars and claws. Inside the tomb, they find an interesting robe and another shocking fact: the sarcophagus that contained the remains of Father Tobyn was empty.

During this session, the party fought in the following encounters, received the following items and experience, and all gained 1 Hero Point for their roleplaying.
