Theism in the World of Golarion

Religion is a very intrinsic part of any Pathfinder campaign.

Religion is a very intrinsic part of any Pathfinder campaign.

This is another post adding upon the framework set up for converting Pathfinder Campaign Setting content to a GURPS system. This post discusses the finer details of religious conduct.

Devotion

The following mechanisms of worship of religions in this campaign are inspired by a model put forward by my friend in his The Empress of India GURPS campaign. While a believer of a religion has faith that he is in grace, a certain strength of mind will be afforded to the character. When a believer thinks he is in sin or impure, there is a certain weakness of mind.

Theism

Characters can choose to be a Theist, which is a new advantage that defines the framework for a religion and its beliefs.

Theist [5] Advantage
You acquire +1 Will whenever you feel you are pure and in the good graces of your religion. When considered to be impure or in sin, you are instead at -1 Will. You must select a Code of Honor of a religion of Golarion.

The religions of Golarions and their beliefs are not intended to be full arrays of disadvantages. However, it is still encouraged that players who have stronger tendencies towards certain behaviors should look into respective disadvantages.

Churches of Golarion

Belief in a religion does not necessarily imply that a character is involved in the doings of that deity’s churches. As this is more of a social notion, and to represent further involvement and responsibility of a character, this will be modelled using traditional GURPS advantages (and disadvantages) where appropriate.

In this case, players are encouraged to consider the following:

  • Claim to Hospitality (Church of Deity) [5] (B41),
  • Clerical Investment [5] (B43),
  • Contact Group (Church of Deity) [Varies] (B44),
  • Contact (in the Church of Deity) [Varies] (B44),
  • Patron (Church of Deity) [Varies] (B72), and
  • a Rank (in the Church of Deity) [Varies] (B29).

Faiths

This is a brief enumeration of most of the deities and philosophies of Golarion and corresponding, associated Codes of Honor disadvantages. Divine Spheres (see this) that are relevant to a given deity are also listed.

Furthermore, there are a number of suggested disadvantages to consider if a character possesses more extreme behavior. The latter of these are not required rules for the faithful of a religion, but are inspiration from which to draw from in the process of character generation. Players are encouraged to seek other resources for more information on a given deity. For all faiths, Fanaticism [-15] (B136) is always an option for those extremely faithful to a religion or organized worship.

Other deities or philosophies can be added by request.
