My broad research interests include: Machine Learning, Data Mining, Text Mining, Bioinformatics, and Data Privacy.  A lot of current research is devoted to Ocean Data, particularly ship tracking and underwater acoustics. Both the topics are the themes of MERIDIAN (Marine Environmental Research Infrastructure for Data Integration and Application Network), a large, CFI-funded mutidisciplinary project in which I am the Principal Investigator, with partners at the University of Victoria, UBC, Simon Fraser, Université du Québec à Rimouski and Dahousie. I am also interested in the ethics of Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science in general. Finally, I like to think about, talk about  and do technology transfer: the process of interaction between university-based research and the industrial R & D.
