Biography

I am a Canada Research Chair (Tier 1),  a Professor of Computer Science, and the Director of the Institute for Big Data Analytics at Dalhousie University. I am also  Distinguished University Professor (Emeritus)  of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Ottawa, and a Professor with the Institute of Computer Science, Polish Academy of Sciences. Having taught in many countries on five continents, I am committed to the idea of international cooperation in research and education.

My broad research interests include Data and Text Mining, Text Analytics,  Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Data Privacy. I have authored and co-authored more than 250 research papers. I have supervised more than  fifty graduate students at the M.Sc. and Ph.D. level. I am the Principal Investigator of the Marine Environmental Research Infrastructure for Data Integration and Application Network (MERIDIAN), a Canada Foundation of Innovation consortium developing Data Science solutions for Ocean Data. Another field of interest is technology transfer: the process of interaction between university-based research and the industrial R & D. With the other co-founders, I am working on an exciting startup, Devera Logic,  in the area Identity Access Management.

I hold the titles of the Fellow of the European Coordinating Committee for Artificial Intelligence and of the Fellow of the  Canadian Artificial Intelligence Association.
