P H I L I P T. C O X In 1970 I obtained an MSc (Hons I) in Mathematics from the University of Auckland, and in 1977 a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo. From 1977 I served in positions from Assistant Professor to Professor at the Universities of Waterloo, Toronto, Auckland, Acadia University, and Dalhousie/TUNS. I co-founded Prograph International in 1985 and served at various times as Vice President Research and Development, Chief Technology Officer, and President and CEO from 1985 to 1995. In 1995 I founded Pictorius Incorporated and served as Chairman, President and CEO until 1996. Research & Teaching In general, my research involves using appropriate visualisations in the computing process as an aid to understanding and building algorithms and data. In particular, I am interested in visual programming languages, both general-purpose languages for expressing algorithms in any domain, as well as domain-specific languages which can take advantage of existing, well-understood visualisations. Other areas of interest are software design and production methodologies and environments, application frameworks, component-based computing, computational logic, abductive inference and diagnosis, logic and functional programming. My graduate teaching focusses on the use of visualisation in the design of objects, which may be abstract (software), or concrete (3D or mulitdimensional objects).
