Waern (1997): Experimental work

Question: "Can we use keyhole plan recognition to detect enough of a user's plan to find out if an entry or a set of entries are interesting, or uninteresting, to that user?"

5 users, using the same mail reader, to capture search & reading strategies

Stage 1: 2 users and verbal protocol method

Stage 2: Record user behavior (silent)

Stage 3: Production of HTA

Observations:

Even for experimenters, difficult to recognize when something was interesting
(Time taken scanning not necessarily a factor)

However, identification of non-interesting items more readily apparent
(Non-selection)
