Direct manipulation of graphical objects:

Sketchpad, Sutherland (1963 MIT Ph.D thesis)

Reaction handler, Newman (1966, graphical potentiometer {variable resistor})

AMBIT/G (1968, MIT - introduction of first icons & menus)

The Mouse:

Developed at Standford Research Lab (1965)

Made famous at Xerox Parc, and part of the Xerox Star (1981)

Windows:

First proposed by Alan Kay (1969 Ph.D thesis)

COPILOT (1974 - Standford systems)

Famous commercial systems:

Xerox Star (1981)
Apple Lisa (1982), Macintosh (1984)
