Contributions to Intellectual Environment
Extract from the frequently asked question list for a course:

Reminder: Contributions made during synchronous in-person classes and contributions made to the discussion fora count equally.  Although I prefer you to speak up in class it is not essential for anyone to speak in class to to earn their grade for contributing to the intellectual atmosphere of inquiry, and in turn to the learning.

From the syllabus (§6.5):

Part of your grade will depend on an assessment of your contributions to discussion during and outside of class meetings, i.e., your readiness and eagerness to engage actively in discussion, your display of familiarity with the class materials, and willingness to ask intelligent and helpful questions.  Your grade will depend more on your contribution to the intellectual atmosphere of inquiry than by the number of questions, answers or comments.  Your contribution will be assessed for both the synchronous (in-class) and asynchronous portions of class.

Uncollegial behaviour will reduce your grade.

Please be aware of the guidelines for how your contribution will be assessed:

You earn between zero and four points for each of three criteria: Willingness to contribute; Sharing interesting or helpful content; and Demonstrating understanding of material or asking helpful questions (aiding yourself, other students, or both).  The total points determines your grade.

The guidelines for the three criteria are:

Willingness to contribute
Need little or no prodding to participate 4 points
Needs more than minimal encouragement or invitation 3 points
Usually requires prodding 2 points
Does not participate or participates very little 1 or 0 points
Sharing interesting or helpful content
Always has something interesting to share or work through with the help of other students and the professor (or a TA) 4 points
More often than not productively participates in discussion generated by others 3 points
Rarely contributes in anyway to advancing the class 2 points
Does not contribute productively 1 or 0 points
Demonstrating understanding of material or asking helpful questions…
Makes the class better for all of the students 4 points
Brings interesting ideas and perspectives that help some of the students 3 points
Does not always demonstrate a grounding in the material, perhaps the student has not read all of the assigned material or otherwise prepared 2 points
Does not demonstrate any meaningful grounding in the material 1 or 0 points

Attendance is not mandatory however students who do not come to classes rarely achieve high grades and many fail the course because they are not able to demonstrate sufficient understanding of the material.
