Hillary's family values

In a Washington Post Op-Ed, Michael Kinsley points out some inconsistencies between the GOP's approach to Elián González and its early rhetoric against Hillary Clinton. In 1992, the Republican Party blasted Clinton for her position in supporting a 12-year-old's right to effectively divorce his parents. In that Florida custody case, the child wished to stay in a loving foster home, away from an alcoholic father and an unstable mother. Kinsley reminds readers that, partially in response to Clinton's views on the matter, the 1992 GOP platform declared that Republicans trust parents and believe that they, not courts and lawyers, know what is best for their children. How Republicans will reconcile their pro-family ideals with their stand on Juan Miguel and Elián González remains to be seen.
