Introduction to behavioural/human aspects of computing as applied to hypertext and other on-line information tools.

From the syllabus (Winter 2018)

The purposes of this course are to give students a working background in Human Factors (HF) and human-computer interaction (HCI) especially as they relate to hypertext, and to sharpen their thinking, reading, writing, and presentation skills.

This course will introduce issues related to behavioural/human aspects of on-line information systems (especially hypertext), provide students with some (reading) knowledge of behavioural research methodology, and demonstrate its relevance to on-line information systems and computing endeavours in general.

Learning objectives

1. Given a scholarly article in a peer-reviewed venue the student will be able to assess if the methodology and conclusions are appropriate.
2. The student will be able to
   1. effectively and efficiently contextualize several scholarly articles about topics in human factors of hypertext within a framework of fundamental principles for knowledge mobilization in their own original scholarship;
      and
   2. translate a variety of sources to explain the essence, details and relevance of a topic in human factors to other graduate students both in written and oral form.
3. The student will be able to select appropriate statistical tests for basic hypotheses in human factors.
4. The student will be able to apply information from published research to develop a plan for a valid experiment to test the support for a hypothesis in human factors.
5. The student will be able to effectively critique and correct writing by other students similar to what a peer reviewer would do for a submission to a journal or conference.
