The Following steps outline the process for configuring your computer to access the Queen's Executive MBA Program's
Ottawa network and printers.
*Please note that you should write down any current network settings that are on your computer before you change
them. This will make the process of reconnecting to your office network much easier after you have finished your
course.
1. Ensure that you have a 10baseT Ethernet adapter properly installed in your computer. Also make sure you have
your Windows CD and your network adapter driver diskette on hand before changing your settings. (Some computers
have a copy of these on the hard drive)
2. Using the "Start" menu go to "Settings" and choose "Control panel"
3. In the Control panel double click on the "Network" icon
4. In the Network properties dialog box you should see a listing for your network adapter among a number of other
items. You will need to have TCP/IP for your network card in this list. If you do not see this then you should
click on "Add" then choose "Protocol" then "Microsoft" then TCP/IP. Click "OK"
to add the protocol. You should be returned to the Network Properties box where you will see the TCP/IP for your
card.
5. Highlight this protocol with your mouse and click on the "Properties" button.
6. Once in the TCP/IP properties you will see a series of tabs. Click on the tab that reads "IP address".
In the box you will need make sure that "Obtain IP Address Automatically" is checked.

to return to the "Network Properties" box.
11. Click on the "Identification" tab and enter your name for "Computer Name". You can enter
"Ottawa" for the "Work Group" and "Laptop" for "Description". (Note: You
can leave these settings as is if they are already setup for your office network.)
12. Return to the "Configuration" tab. Check to see if you have "Client for Microsoft Networks"
at the top of the list. If you do not then click "Add" and choose "Client" then choose "Microsoft"
then "Client for Microsoft Networks".
13. Return to the network configuration screen once again. Look to see if you have "File and Print Sharing
for Microsoft Networks" at the bottom of the list. If you do not then click on the large button that reads,
"File and Print sharing" and check off the print sharing section.
14. Return to the configuration screen. Ensure that the "Primary Network Logon" is set to "Client
for Microsoft Networks".
15. Click on OK. The computer will attempt to copy some files. You may require your Win95 or 98 CD at this point
if the Windows files are not stored on your computer. (Most new laptops have the Windows files stored under C:\windows\options\cabs)
16. Restart your computer when prompted to do so.
17. After re-booting your computer a network login box will show up. Enter your name and click OK. There is no
password required.
*The following steps outline the procedure for setting up our network printers.
18. After the computer has finished loading go to the "Start" menu and select "Run". In the
run box type "\\printers". This should open a new window listing the two network printers, "Viper"
and "Ferrari".
19. Use the right mouse button to click on one of these printers and select "Install" from the menu.
20. Check "No" to print from DOS
21. Name the printer the same as their network name i.e. Viper.
22. Choose Viper to be the default printer since it is the closest to the Lecture Theater.
23. I would recommend checking "No" to print a test page because if everyone is printing test pages you
won't know if it is yours. You can test it after it is setup with something that you will recognize is yours.
24. Click on "Finish". The system will attempt to copy some files from the print server. You may be
required to skip 1-2 files. One of them is a "watermark" file that is not available. If you have to
skip more than that you should get some assistance.
25. After completing the above steps you should be able to access our network and send print jobs to our printers.
*You may also need to complete the following steps to access the Internet if your computer has been on another
network.
26. Under your Netscape or Internet Explorer settings you will need to ensure that you are not accessing the Internet
through a Proxy server.
27. These settings are found in Internet Explorer under the "View" menu under "Internet Options".
Click on the connection tab and select "Connect using a local area network" Ensure that "use a
proxy server" is not checked.
28. In Netscape the settings are found under the "Edit" menu under "Advanced Options". Choose
"No Proxies".
29. Close either web browser and restart it after making changes.
