World Wide Web Site Summarization
As the size and diversity of the World Wide Web grow rapidly, it has been more and more difficult for the user to
skim over a Web site and get an idea of its contents. Currently, manually constructed summaries from a large number of
volunteer experts are available, such as the Open Directory Project (DMOZ). This research
is directed towards automating the summarization task. We develop an approach which applies machine learning and
natural language processing techniques to summarize a Web site automatically. We compare the automatically generated W3SS summaries with DMOZ summaries, home page browsing and time-limited
site browsing, separately, for a number of academic and commercial Web sites. Overall, the automatically generated
summaries generally convey the same information to the reader as DMOZ summaries do, and they can save users browsing
time in terms of understanding the main contents of the Web site. This is confirmed by a comparative
evaluation by human subjects.
From DMOZ, we selected manually constructed summaries of 20 Web sites. Sites 1 to 5 are academic ones in Software Engineering field, and sites 6 to 10
academic ones in Artificial
Intelligence field. Sites 11 to 15 are commercial Web sites of Major Companies, and sites 16 to 20 commercial
ones of E-commerce Companies. Then we used our
approach to create summarization reports of these Web sites one by one.
Summarization evaluation methods can be divided into 2 categories: Intrinsic and Extrinsic.
Intrinsic evaluation measures the quality of summaries directly (e.g., by comparing them to ideal summaries). Extrinsic
methods measure how well the summaries help in performing a particular task (e.g., classification). The extrinsic
evaluation is also called task-based evaluation.
