Jean Walrand, Communication Networks, a first course, McGraw-Hill 1998 (2nd edition). (The first three chapters give you a nice overview of the working of networks and the Internet.)

Simon Singh, The Code Book, Fourth Estate, London 1999 (paperback 2000). (An fun reading about the history of cryptography. Singh wrote also a popular book on Fermat’s Last Theorem).
