I have completed over 40 R&D projects sponsored by multiple research grants awarded by government agencies and private organisations, within Canada, Malaysia and UK. Most of the research projects led to the development of Innovative Technology Demonstrators as ‘proofs of concept’ in order to assist with technology awareness and as precursor to full-scale application development. Most of my projects have an inter-disciplinary component, in particular collaboration with healthcare professionals. I have categorized my projects as (a) Projects at Dalhousie University; (b) Projects at Universiti Sains Malaysia; and (c) Projects at University of Surrey. Most of these R&D projects originated from two large-scale ESPRIT funded projects—(i) Translators’s Workbench II Project and (ii) MULTILEX Project--that involved collaboration with European companies and universities. The team leader and project owner was Prof. Khurshid Ahmad at University of Surrey. Both these ESPRIT projects were broken into smaller sub-projects which were handled and delivered by individual researchers within the research team. A description of these two prominent ESPRIT projects follows: Translator's Work Bench (TWB) I & II, sponsored by ESPRIT and a consortium of German IT companies, including Triumph Adler, Siemens and Daimler-Benz and the Universities of Heidelberg and Catalonia (Spain). The intention was to store terminological and linguistic information using a knowledge-base paradigm together with a machine-assisted translation system made accessible through a Europe-wide communication network. This was a hundred man-year project spread over three years and had a value of 7 million ECUs. Multifunctional Lexica (MULTILEX), sponsored by ESPRIT and a consortium of German, French, Dutch and Italian IT companies and universities. The intention here was to define the European standards for a common European lexica which could be relevant to a variety of applications including machine translation, automatic knowledge acquisition from text and electronic publishing. This project had a value of 2.5 million ECU's. 1) Title: The Design and Development of a Virtual Corpus Manager Role: Principal Investigator Application Area: Artificial Intelligence (Natural Language Processing) Sponsor/Funding Agency: ESPRIT (Translator’s WorkBench II & MULTILEX) Collaborators: Triumph Adler, Siemens, Philips, Daimler-Benz and Universities of Heidelberg, Munster (Germany) and Catalonia (Spain) Duration: July 1993 - December 1994
