Alternate Rules for Scrolls in GURPS High Fantasy

A scrollcase.

A scrollcase.

This post is a companion post to the alternate rules proposed for a high fantasy magic system and delves into the concept of how scrolls will work using this model. These rules propose further changes to the Scroll spell (M57) and makes it more accessible rather than gated by its GURPS college.

As ruled on M57, the Scroll spell will have the following new ruling and be an exception to the school and sphere system found in the proposed magic system rules.  This will also put the rules of scrolls more in line with rules found in the Pathfinder or D&D rules.

Any spellcaster will be able to cast this spell but must be able to succeed on the spell he wishes to write and then make a successful Thaumatology roll in order to articulate the greater mechanics behind the spell. If the caster has the Enchantment college or Craft sphere, they can make a respective Enchantment or Craft skill in replacement of a Thaumatology roll.

The language of the scroll depends on the caster’s source of magic. If they are using Magery, the scroll will be written in a language of their choice. If they are using Power Investiture, the language of the scroll typically is associated with the deity or domain they are following. Many magicians tend to use Draconic or Celestial for Arcane and Divine magic respectively. In order to read a scroll, usual language restrictions apply as per the spell. Furthermore, the reader of a scroll must have knowledge of the associated college or school for the spell.

All other aspects of the spell remain the same.
