Hi! Welcome to my home on the World Wide Web... I'm an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Computer Science at Dalhousie University, where I co-direct the Graphics and Experiential Media (GEM) Lab. I'm also current chair of the HCI, Visualization, and Graphics research cluster at Dal. This webpage is intentionally short: details, news, research opportunities, publications, student bios, etcetera are on my research lab website.

Research Overview

My work explores mobile, immersive, and/or ubiquitous computer interfaces, particularly their relationship to the built environment and to human physicality. This intersects a number of research topics in HCI, including immersive visualization, mobile computing, mixed reality environments, interactive exhibits, and embodied interaction. I'm also interested in the design of technologies that support spatial thinking in situ (when wayfinding, exploring, annotating, dispatching, etc.).

Teaching

Background

Before coming to Dalhousie I was Associate Professor at OCAD University, where I helped to initiate and for a short time directed their graduate program in Digital Futures. Prior to this I was a postdoctoral researcher in the GVU Center at Georgia Tech and a member of the Pixi Lab. I hold a PhD in Computer Science (Dalhousie, 2008), and have undergraduate degrees in Computer Science (McGill, 1996), English (Wilfrid Laurier, 1996), and Education (Queen's, 1997). Before graduate studies I worked in software R&D for companies in Waterloo, Montreal, and Denver, and had a startup in St. John's, NL.

I'm a big fan of trail running, of freeform radio, and of working to have a positive impact on this amazing planet we call home. For those in the know, my Erdős number is 3, and I am a level 40 Pokémon GO trainer (but I am no longer catching 'em all).
