Now more than ever

It is getting down to crunch time on my thesis and project as the presentation date is just three weeks away. I only hope that I can pass through this time without going a little bit crazy. I doubt that, but hey I'm in Spain, that should count for something... and perhaps lead to the fact that I am already a little bit crazy.

I will say that while my site indicates temperatures in the vicinity of -6 and -10°C in Halifax, I walked the 15 minutes to campus today in a t-shirt. I believe it was around 20°, and I suspect I'll be in shorts by the end of the month. Of course, then I'm leaving and going to the UK and then back to Canada where my idyllic early summer dreams will be dashed.

Year 6

In the universe which measures time since the creation of this website, it is now year six. I guess if such a universe existed, the new year would likely be something more significant like the date I bought the domain, or the beginning of the message.board, which would put the start of the year a bit later. In any case I have been at this for a long time. Arguably longer than I have done almost anything else in my life. Of course, the past year and a half have been pretty weak, but I still update it more frequently than some sites I've seen.

I think it is most interesting that the forum on my site which was originally designed to allow communication among my friends when we were away from university the summer after my first year, is more or less dead. Despite my intentions, the forum was at its peak when we were all living in the same city, in some cases, the same apartment. Now that we are all living in different corners of the Earth, it doesn't make a lot of sense that it would go unused, but I guess when people get away, they are less apt to stay in touch. I know that is true for me. I did manage to see a couple of my friends when I was home over the holidays and for that I was grateful. But now I am back to reality and procrastinating by writing on here, which in all honesty is how this site was born and maintained all these years.

Christmas season

As you can see, I have unleased the Christmas template again. Seems a bit weird this year since I barely used this site at all. I have been away from Canada for the entirety of 2006 and my EuropeAdventure site has taken all my attention for obvious reasons. I guess it is fairly difficult to maintain multiple websites. To create content out of nothing. And to be brutally honest a lot of times I just forget about this site. The site that was my whole life for so many years. :P

If you are interested I made a more seasonal post over at europeadventure.ca.

SVN and Berkeley 4.3

For any of my Mac-using readers who also have a local installation of Subversion, the excellent version control system, this post may interest you.

I recently (today) tried to commit some work to a local repository on my computer that I haven't used in a while (couple months). Once I realized that I didn't have the svnserve running, and got that sorted out, I ran into an issue with the Berkeley database that subversion uses. My guess is that one of the recent updates to the OS, maybe the last one: 10.4.8, updated the version of Berkeley db on my system. It is possible that I did it myself when I was updating some packages in fink, but in any case, if you run into the same problem, there is a solution here: http://subversion.tigris.org/faq.html. If you haven't upgraded subversion, then you will still have an "older" svnadmin binary. The only thing to note about the instructions is that there is an error that you will get from running the recover command, like this one:

svnadmin: DB_RUNRECOVERY: Fatal error, run database recovery svnadmin: bdb: /path/to/repository/db/log.0000000002: log file open failed: No such file or directory svnadmin: bdb: PANIC: No such file or directory svnadmin: bdb: DB_ENV->log_put: 2: DB_RUNRECOVERY: Fatal error, run database recovery

Apparently this can be ignored. I did, and things seem to be working again. Make sure you back up the repositories before you start too... just in case.

MacBooks

I am typing this entry from a MacBook in the Apple store on Regent Street in London. I must admit, that while the computer itself is very nice, these new keyboards suck.

I don't want to hog this machine any more than I have so I will leave you with that.

españa 2006

I have uploaded a new wallpaper called españa 2006 to my Wallpaper page. It has a nice summery feel to it and isn't very obtrusive. If you would like it in another size than what is available now, please let me know I can add it. This one is best not stretched too much because of the typographical element to it. Enjoy.

Tomcat

Does installing Tomcat on my laptop make me a bad person? Probably not. Dirty maybe, but certainly not bad.

Some of you know how I feel about Java, and I really don't want to get into it right now, but suffice it to say that we don't see eye to eye. But when required to do something for either class or work, I like to think that I am a mature enough person to place my personal and professional feelings aside and get things done. And I don't do them half-assed either... I commit. :)

But what I really wanted to say is that if you are interested in getting Tomcat up and running on an OS X system, there is a nice walkthrough for installing Tomcat and MySQL on Mac OS X at benslade.com.

Of course, after you install it, if you want to use it, well that's where Java starts getting involved and then you are on your own. My only solace is in the fact that Tomcat is part of the Apache project, which I have much admiration for.
